What is Magma?
Magma is a hybrid server software that combines Forge (for mods) with the Bukkit/Spigot API (for plugins). It lets you run a modpack server with admin plugins like LuckPerms, EssentialsX, or WorldEdit โ something neither pure Forge nor pure Bukkit can do alone.
Why use a hybrid server?
The classic problem: you want to run a modpack like ATM9, but you also want plugins for permissions, anti-grief, and economy. Pure Forge has no plugin support. Pure Paper has no mod support. Magma bridges the gap.
Common use cases
- Public modpack servers needing rank/permissions plugins
- RPG/adventure servers combining mods and grief protection
- Friend-group modpack servers wanting basic admin tools
- Communities running curated mod sets with custom plugin features
Magma vs Mohist
Magma and Mohist are very similar โ both are Forge+Bukkit hybrids. Mohist is more actively maintained for newer Minecraft versions. See our Magma vs Mohist comparison.
Caveats
- Compatibility โ some Forge mods don't play well with hybrid servers. Test before going live.
- Performance โ hybrid servers have slightly more overhead than pure Forge or pure Paper.
- Update cadence โ Magma sometimes lags behind upstream Forge for new Minecraft versions.
