Java vs Bedrock Minecraft: What's the Difference?
Minecraft comes in two main editions: Java (the original PC version) and Bedrock (the cross-platform version). Here's what you need to know:
Java Edition
- Available on Windows, macOS, and Linux
- The original version of Minecraft
- Supports a huge library of mods, plugins, and modpacks
- More customizable — Forge, Fabric, Paper, Spigot all run on Java
- Java players can only connect to Java servers
Bedrock Edition
- Available on Windows 10/11, Xbox, PlayStation, Nintendo Switch, iOS, and Android
- Better performance on lower-end devices
- Cross-play between all Bedrock platforms
- Fewer mods available, but supports Marketplace content
- Bedrock players can only connect to Bedrock servers
Which should I choose? If you primarily play on PC and want mods/plugins, choose Java. If you play on console/mobile or want friends on different devices to join, choose Bedrock.
Can Java and Bedrock players play together?
Not natively — Java and Bedrock servers are separate. However, some third-party proxy software (like GeyserMC) can bridge the two, which we support on our platform.
