How to Install Spigot Plugins on Your Free Minecraft Server
Installing plugins on Spigot is identical to Paper. Here's the complete process for your free FreeMCServers.org Spigot server.
Step 1: Download a plugin
The biggest Spigot plugin sources:
- SpigotMC Resources — the original and largest library
- Modrinth — modern alternative with cleaner UX
- Hangar — newer, mostly Paper-focused but many plugins work on Spigot
Download the plugin's .jar file. Check the listed compatible Minecraft versions before downloading.
Step 2: Upload via the file manager
- Open your dashboard on FreeMCServers.org
- Click your Spigot server
- Go to Files → plugins
- Drag and drop the
.jarfile
Step 3: Restart
Plugins load at server startup. From the dashboard, click Restart. Watch the console — you should see lines like [INFO] [PluginName] Loading PluginName v1.2.3.
Step 4: Configure
After first run, plugins create a config folder in plugins/<PluginName>/. Edit config.yml and restart to apply.
Common Spigot plugin issues
- "Plugin not enabling" — usually a missing dependency. Read the plugin description for required plugins (often Vault).
- Version mismatch — plugin built for a different Minecraft version. Download a compatible build.
- Conflicts — two plugins claiming the same feature. Remove one.
Should you use Paper instead?
Paper is a drop-in upgrade from Spigot that runs the same plugins faster. If you're starting fresh, see our Paper hub or read Spigot vs Paper.
