Mohist vs Magma: Which Hybrid Server is Better in 2026?
Mohist and Magma both let you run Forge mods alongside Bukkit plugins. They serve the same niche but have practical differences. In 2026, here's how to choose.
Quick verdict
Pick Mohist in nearly all cases. It's more actively maintained and supports more Minecraft versions. Pick Magma only if you have a specific reason — usually a legacy 1.12.2 or 1.16.5 server.
Activity and updates
Mohist releases new builds frequently — usually within days of upstream Forge updates. Magma updates more slowly. For new Minecraft versions, Mohist is almost always available first.
Version support
- Mohist — 1.7.10, 1.10.2, 1.12.2, 1.16.5, 1.18.2, 1.19.x, 1.20.1+
- Magma — Smaller set, mainly 1.12.2 and 1.16.5
Mod compatibility
Both have similar mod compatibility — both struggle with the same problematic mods (heavy NMS, custom worldgen, exotic networking). Mohist's larger user base means more people have tested mod combinations and posted compatibility lists.
Plugin compatibility
Both run nearly all Bukkit/Spigot plugins. Modern plugins work fine on both. Very old plugins occasionally break on either.
Stability
Mohist on its supported recent versions is reasonably stable. Magma on its supported legacy versions is also stable. The "stability gap" is small.
Community
Mohist has a more active Discord, faster issue resolution, and more available compatibility data. Magma's community is smaller but still active.
Performance
Both incur a small overhead vs pure Forge or pure Paper, but the difference between them is negligible.
When Magma might be better
- You're running 1.12.2 with legacy mods that have specific Magma testing
- You hit a bug on Mohist that doesn't reproduce on Magma
- You have a very specific community-recommended Magma setup
When Mohist is the clear winner
- You want any Minecraft version 1.18 or newer
- You want active project development
- You want the larger compatibility database from a more active community
- You want the latest bug fixes
Switching between them
Trivial — both use the same mod and plugin formats. Just create the new server type on FreeMCServers.org and copy your world, mods, and plugins folders over.
Should you use a hybrid at all?
Only if you genuinely need both Forge mods AND Bukkit plugins. If you just need mods, use pure Forge. If you just need plugins, use Paper. Hybrids add complexity and you should avoid them when possible.
