How to Install Forge Mods on Your Free Minecraft Server

Installing Forge mods on a server is straightforward but requires that all players have the same mods installed on their clients. Here's the complete process.

Step 1: Pick the right Minecraft version

Mods are tied to specific Minecraft versions. Before installing anything:

1. Decide what Minecraft version you want to play (e.g. 1.20.1)
2. Make sure your FreeMCServers.org Forge server is running that version
3. Only download mods compatible with that exact version

Step 2: Download mods

The two main mod sources:

• CurseForge — the largest mod library
• Modrinth — modern alternative, growing fast

Each mod download is a .jar file. Download all the mods you want.

Step 3: Upload to your server

1. Open your FreeMCServers.org dashboard
2. Click your Forge server
3. Go to Files → mods folder
4. Drag all your .jar files in

Step 4: Install the same mods on your client

This is the part most people miss. Every player must have the same mods on their client too. Without this, you'll get "Forge mod rejections" when trying to join.

1. Install the Forge launcher for your Minecraft version (download from files.minecraftforge.net)
2. Or use the CurseForge / Prism Launcher / GDLauncher app
3. Drop the same mod .jar files into your local .minecraft/mods/ folder
4. Launch Minecraft using the Forge profile

Step 5: Restart the server & connect

From your dashboard, restart the server. In the console, watch for lines like:

[INFO] [minecraft/MOD] Loading mod: jei (version 11.6.0)

Once the server is running, connect from your Forge-modded Minecraft client.

Common Forge mod issues

• Version mismatch — server has 1.20.1 mods, client has 1.19.4. Make sure both match.
• Missing dependency — many mods depend on libraries like JEI, Architectury, KubeJS. Check the mod page.
• Server-side only mods — a few mods are server-only (like spawn protection mods). Don't put these on the client.
• Client-side only mods — Optifine, Iris, mini-maps. These shouldn't be on the server.
