Fabric vs Forge: Which Modding Platform Should You Use?
Fabric and Forge are the two dominant Minecraft modding platforms. Both are free, both work great on FreeMCServers.org, but they have different strengths. Here's how to choose.
The short version
- Choose Forge if you want big content modpacks (RLCraft, ATM, FTB) or famous tech mods like Mekanism.
- Choose Fabric if you want maximum performance, the latest Minecraft version, or a curated smaller mod set.
Mod selection
Forge has more mods overall โ it's been around longer and has the largest historical library. CurseForge alone hosts 70,000+ Forge mods. Fabric has fewer total mods but a more curated selection focused on quality and performance.
Important: most mods are exclusive to one platform. A "Forge mod" usually doesn't work on Fabric and vice versa. Some popular mods (Create, JEI/REI, Iris) have both Forge and Fabric versions, but you can't mix them.
Performance
Fabric wins on raw performance:
- Faster server boot times
- Lower memory overhead from the loader itself
- The best performance mods (Sodium, Lithium, Starlight) are Fabric-first
Forge has caught up with mods like Embeddium and Rubidium (which are Sodium ports), but Fabric is still the gold standard for optimization.
Update speed
Fabric updates to new Minecraft versions almost immediately โ usually within hours or days of release. Forge takes weeks or months. If you want to play 1.21 with mods on day one, Fabric is the answer.
Modpack ecosystem
This is where Forge wins decisively. The famous content modpacks are mostly Forge:
- All the Mods 9 โ Forge
- RLCraft โ Forge
- FTB Skies โ Forge (some have Fabric versions)
- SkyFactory โ Forge
- Pixelmon โ Forge
Fabric has fewer giant kitchen-sink modpacks. The Fabric ecosystem leans toward smaller, more focused mod collections.
Mod loader design
Fabric is designed to be modular โ Fabric API is split into many small components, so you only load what you need. Forge is more monolithic but provides more features out of the box.
Community size
Forge has a larger overall community, more documentation, and more YouTube tutorials. Fabric is growing fast but still smaller.
How to choose
- Want a famous modpack? โ Pick the platform that modpack is built for (usually Forge).
- Want maximum performance? โ Fabric.
- Want the newest Minecraft version with mods? โ Fabric.
- Want technical Minecraft / Carpet mods? โ Fabric.
- Want big tech/automation mods? โ Forge.
Can I run both?
Yes โ you can have a Fabric server and a Forge server running independently on FreeMCServers.org. They're separate servers and don't interfere.
What about NeoForge?
NeoForge is a newer fork of Forge. See our Forge vs NeoForge comparison for that breakdown.
